USP, UCA – there are tons of acronyms to describe what companies do to try and be different. Unique Service Proposition and Unique Competitive Advantage are easy to throw around, but more difficult to implement in real life.

We were recently received an award from Atlantic Progress/Best Companies Group for being one of the “Best Places to Work in Atlantic Canada”. We were #11 to be exact, and of course being the competitive bunch we are, we were all highly dissatisfied that we weren’t in the top 10. (There is always next year!) In a time where finding the right people is such a challenge for us, and for so many of our clients, it’s more important than ever to have an engaged and motivated team moving your business towards its goals. Through our Wedgwood U consulting division, over the last couple of years, we’ve run seminars and consulted with clients about CEO Productivity, Strategic Hiring, Business Continuity Planning and Team Effectiveness – all areas of high risk for most businesses today, in addition to the normal Hazard Risk Issues often addressed by insurance.

I’ve written a number of articles on risk and how important it is to take a broader perspective when you look at the risk in your business (or your personal life, for that matter). Categorizing risk as Strategic, Business or Hazard helps us to organize, and come up with ways to create strategies and processes to minimize the actual and potential costs of these risks. There is a need for insurance brokers to provide more than just Hazard Risk solutions (the risk of things happening to your property, vehicles etc;), but lately I’m seeing a disturbing trend that suggest there is still a lot of work to be done, even on the Hazard side of risk.

What happened with the Gerry Rogers/Social Media fiasco last week is a great example what can happen if you don’t understand what is going on with social media. That’s whole topic has been beaten to death so I won’t elaborate more but……
